Wichita Police Swoop Down on BTK Killer

The street address from the building front has been cleverly scribbled out.

After more than three decades, Wichita police have finally arrested the notorious BTK killer. 59 year old Dennis Rader is suspected of at least eight, and possibly ten brutal murders in the area over a period of twelve years. He is also accused of teasing the Wichita police department relentlessly, and sending hurtful letters to the Wichita Eagle.

"What is wrong with you coppers?" read one such note. "Where did you get your training, Sears & Roebuck? It's not like I'm hiding out in Calcutta or something - this is Wichita. Tell you what. I'm going to be in McDonalds this Thursday, ordering a Big Mac and fries".

Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams explained that this was a sly example of Rader's cunning. "The first thing that you need to understand is that there are nine McDonalds in the Wichita area, not just one. Furthermore, they sell burgers for most of the day. They start at 11:00 AM, and go all the way till closing time, which in some cases isn't until midnight."

"We actually did question him at one point in the investigation," said County District Attorney Nola Foulston. "But we let him go after he convinced us that he was nothing but a cranky old man. I mean, he wasn't really all that old, but good lord was he ever cranky."

A break in the case came last March when Rader sent a new note to the Wichita Eagle, saying the he "was afraid I'm going to die of old age before they ever find me." Along with the letter he sent the drivers license of a former victim, a half eaten Hershey bar, and a photograph of the apartment building where "he might live." In typical duplicitous fashion, the address of the building had been obscured with a black marker.
