Watching Podge and Rodge's A Scare at Bedtime at the moment. They're a pair of sadistic puppets, who tell horror stories, strewn with an endless sequence of terrible puns. The current tale tells the story of Cormac McAnus, and his flesh eating cravings. He's fed raw turnips as a punishment, and kept under lock and key by nuns. To feed his flesh craving, he bites his nails- right down to the wrist. In the end, he escapes by eating himself until he's only a head, and then flushing himself down the toilet.

Podge started as a character on the Den, RTE's children's programme section. But he was a bit creepy for the kids. As Zig and Zag, the alter egos of the genius pair who made Irish children's television more original than the comparatively hyper-resourced BBC or ITV, became more less complex characters, their dark sides were siphoned into Podge and Rodge.
