Need to buy some Aleppo pepper? Try Global Food Market. How about smoked Spanish paprika? Tienda.com is the place. They also have recipes and nearly impossible-to-find Spanish jamon. The dried peppers were ingredients I needed a few months back when I wanted to make some reasonably authentic Spanish chorizo. Amazing how easy it is now to find just about any ingredient. Just order and a few days later it's there waiting for you when you get home. The Aleppo and pimenton are tasty substitutions for regular paprika, mmm, deviled eggs.

I got to thinking about it today when I subscribed to David Rosengarten's magazine. You might remember him from a couple of shows he had on FoodTV, easy-going and unpretentious, he still knows wines and foods right down to the age of the ink on the small print. (later addition...he's got some first rate paella porn pictures on his site..that's the chorizo connection).

Test 2 for the steam juicer: plums. I got the HT dark ones for 70 cents a pound. It'll be done in about 15 minutes. This juice will likely go into jelly this weekend. I'm curious to test the steam juicer making broth or stock from oven-roasted oxtail. Can't understand why oxtail is so expensive here, it's always 3 dollars a pound and never on sale. Same with other "borderline" stuff like tongue or tripe, never on sale - though they'd have a hard time making tripe cheap enough for me to try. Some economics is at work here, maybe they figure no one will drive to the store just to buy tongue, so why discount it?

The yield from last night's steam juicer test run was a little over 2 quarts of juice from 5 pounds of apples, not too shabby. Juice is sweet, but not too sweet. It is not dark like cider, nor is it perfectly clear like Motts'. Tastes like apples, tastes pretty good. Well, it's only apple juice....kinda easy to make this way.
