I wonder if Matjes Herring are really a red herring. and do alewives eat their lunch? Did Preacher Roe eat shad roe, dredged in seasoned Wondra flour, with lemon caper sauce? What is the difference between a kipper and a bloater? And why is it, when you Google "blind robins", 90% of your hits will also contain "recently discontinued by Bar Food Products" and "The 8 worst convenience foods"? Was Bar Food Products a real company or just a joke company? When did they start selling blind robins, why did they stop, and what other products do they make now or recently discontinue?

If you still want to buy smoked Blind Robbins Herring, Morey's Fine Fish and Seafood still sells them. They are not the same company as Morey's Markets, in Brainerd, MN - which does not sell blind robbins but does sell lutefisk and lojrom - which sound a lot like "frozed" shad roe to me. Morey's Fine Fish and Seafood doesn't have a website and the package only says "product of Canada". Well, not true, it also says "Purveyors of Fine Fish and Seafood Fresh, Frozen, and Smoked since 1937"..."Ready To Eat....Great Taste"...and "Keep refrigerated at 38 degrees or below" - meaning these stinky delicacies will go on the bottom shelf of my refrigerator, which is a steady 37 degrees.

Something I wrote just evaporated here is a crazy way. I booted up the second computer, the one by my left knee (this one's by my right), and switched back here on the KVM. The mouse is always a bit flakey after a switch, but this time my home page refreshed and the text I had been typing was gone. It was only a sentence.

Here's a word the preview window also has trouble with: Christiansø. If I cut it from this website, only a blank pastes here. If you hit the backspace, that funny letter that looks like the Greek phi trying to become theta vanishes, but the rest of word survives. If you hit the space, the funny letter makes it. Reminds me of when I hit Left-Alt <numeric keypad> 1-6-7 trying to get the degree symbol and everything I had typed before that evaporated same as with the KVM text extinguisher.

Google took me to Denmark in search of smoked herring. Sounds like those Danes have got it down pretty good:

Smoked herring is one of Bornholm's "national dishes" that has been known since the Middle Ages. At one time there were some 50 herring smokehouses on Bornholm, 25 of them in Gudhjem alone. Today there are fewer, but those that remain are larger. Smoked herring tastes best hot from the oven, skinned by hand and eaten with salt, radishes and perhaps a raw egg yolk.


Bornholm smoked herring is a sought-after speciality that could be exported in large quantities if only the raw material were available: The silvery-white herring which is transformed into "gold from the sea" in the smokehouse oven.

Oh, skipping a bit, here's the good part:

Most of them also have indoor facilities - and, of course, you can wash your hands afterwards.

1 rabbit
1/2 lb. pork
 
Bone rabbit and pork. Grind and mix, 1 teaspoon salt,
1 teaspoon red pepper, 1 teaspoon black pepper,
1/2 teaspoon sage, 1/4 teaspoon ginger. Make patties
and fry. 8 servings.
