Mayors of cities where hospitals are under threat of "explosives or anthrax":

  1. Willie L. Brown, San Francisco
  2. Richard M. Daley, Chicago
  3. Lee P. Brown, Houston
  4. Anthony A. Williams, Washington

Note that all of them use their middle initial!

Psssst...if you get really sick anytime between December and April, make sure your hospital isn't in Washington, Houston, San Francisco or Chicago! Pass it on. If that means going out-of-network on your health plan, it might be worth it. Don't ask me how I know these things...

Bringin' it home

I hate when I have to "do PD" at home, but I have been trying to save internet images and my only option was "untitled" as "BMP". Grrrr....I went to TechNet and couldn't find anything for way too long until I did a search on IE6 and "Save as type" and finally looked at this misleadingly named  previous Q260650 (have the QFE de-acronym jokes finally cut MSFT's thick skin?) Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format if Username:Password Is Part of the URL which contained this little kibble'n'bit: This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full. Not another DOH!, the second since 4 o'clock? No! Someone stop me before I stub my toe.

I deleted internet temp files and now I can save jpegs again. Happy ending.

Those portabellas that were $1.99/lb. at Harris Teeter last week are being remaindered at 99 cents. I got three of them, big ones, for 80 cents. They were a little dry, but all they lost was a little water. Tonight, another steak with them, a little garlic, and the pan deglaced with a red cabernet - Mahalo, Mehu-Liisa...uh...amiga.

Tomorrow, in preparation for a rainy weekend, I'll see of there are any portabellas left and make Chili-painted Portabellas in Puff Pastry.

That Japan flag circle in the middle of my mushroom box is the same size as the cannister I placed on top of the closed box....hmmm...the upper surface of the casing is a little higher than the edge of the box...hmmm..I wonder if the weight in the center is inhibiting growth.....DOH! Homer, meet Archimedes...

Mamoun Fandy, author of Saudi Arabia and the Politics of Dissent, does not believe that the bin Laden tape is authentic, even though the technical experts are 98% certain it is. On NPR's All Things Considered last evening (ignore the text, the audio is correct), Fandy tells Robert Siegel that the timing, right after the UN Resolution, is suspect - he's not sure there's a Federal Express in Kandahar to deliver the tape to al-Jazeera overnight! Fandy has interviewed bin Laden and doesn't think the voice is right. Troublesome too is the style: "Pharoh" is more Biblical than Qur'anic, references to Vietnam and Rumsfeld are inconsistent with a typical bin Laden fatwa, and the rhetoric is like Arab Nationalism, not Islamic Militarism.

So, after days of technical specialists looking for splices and Doctor Science digital analysis, a guy who knows what to look for just listens and concludes it's not him, based on style. Maybe there are jobs for English majors after all. Also troubling are the initial disinformational reports claiming authenticity. Who needs him?
