William Saletan says it with style:
On Sunday, Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson appeared on ABC's This Week to rebut President Bush's claims that Islam is peaceful. Robertson theorized that Bush "does not want to be fighting all of Islam and he didn't want to set this thing up as a holy war, and he was very wise. He's playing geopolitics, and in that case it is a very smart move."
OK. Bush doesn't want the world's 1 billion Muslims to think Americans are hostile to Islam. So what did Robertson tell the ABC audience about Islam? "There is absolute, veritable hatred of Jews and the idea that every Jew has got to be killed before the culmination of the age. That's what Islam teaches," he said. "It's violent at its core."
So did Frank Zappa, in a different style:
And when his humble TV servant With humble white hair And humble glasses And a nice brown suit And maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls Tells us our God says It's okay to do this stuff Then we gotta do it 'Cause if we don't do it We ain't gwine up to hebbin! (Depending on which book you're using at the time... Can't use theirs... it don't work... it's all lies... Gotta use mine...) Ain't that right? That's what they say Every night... Every day...

This song is obviously about aberrant genetic engineering, illegal stem cell research, illicit soap operas exploiting our youth, encouraging premarital sex leading ultimately and tragically to abortion. I am outraged!
I gave my love a cherry that had not stone I gave my love a chicken that had no bone I told my love a story that had no end I gave my love a baby that's no cryin'
Oh, and BTW, know how you hear all the time about Tipper Gore's role on the PMRC and censorship of rock music? Let's check out the rest of the quartet and, no, they weren't John, George, and Ringo:
Calling themselves the PMRC (Parents' Music Resource Coalition), concerned parents, including Tipper Gore, wife of then-Tennessee Senator Albert Gore, Susan Baker, wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker, Georgie Packwood, wife of Oregon Senator Robert Packwood, and Nancy Thurmond, wife of South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond, construct a campaign designed to 'educate' parents about certain alarming new trends in rock music.
Even if Tipper sang lead, the doo-wops were 100% right-wing, - the same Belmonts who sneer at her role in that mess now. When they do, it is your responsibility to 'educate' them.

Lookee Here! - Farofa with sausage finely-chopped, black beans and rice with farofa on top...and this, made with fresh yucca and sounds a little like a Brazilian pannekoeken:
BOLO DE AIPIM Manioc Breakfast Cake
INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs. manioc root 14 T. (1-3/4 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 C. sugar 4 large eggs Scant 2 C. (less 2 T.) all-purpose flour 1 t. baking powder 2 C. milk 2 C. fresh or canned unsweetened coconut milk
C. = Cup; T. = Tablespoon; t. = teaspoon --------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (Update 12/03/02 - this ain't near hot enough). Generously butter a 2-inch deep 9X13 (or a little larger) inch baking pan. Flour the pan and tap out any excess. Peel the manioc root and grate as finely as possible, removing all threads. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, blend the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the flour and baking powder and beat until smooth. Fold in the grated manioc root and gradually add the milk and coconut milk. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 30 minutes. Cool on a rack and cut into squares or diamond shapes when ready to serve. Keeps for 2 days covered and refrigerated.
A couple recipes at that message board call for dende oil. Once again, it looks as though Sendexnet is the source. "Palm oil that is semisolid at room temperature because it is so high in saturated fat," - not for the faint of heart, I guess.

Roman Republic: Salt in the Fields of Carthage
by Frank Bohager
Excerpt One:
How did it come about that we transpire these stellar examples of patriotic
sacrifice and character until we see the sorry sight of Nero commingling
like a jester with common rabble? Of an army and plebeian population that
sold itself to the highest bidder or the one who doles out the most? Of a
Senate that cares mostly about preserving their lives and possessions and
least about its duty and responsibility that it actually prefers these
dictators for life?
Excerpt Two:
The agrarian revolt must have contributed greatly to the decline of the
Republic. The Italian farmers couldn't compete with the increased slave
labor-grown corn of Sicily. The increased influx of slaves which showed also
the excessive wealth and extravagance of the Orders, displaced peasants and
free workers
Excerpt Three:
The Romans had violated both natural law (their written law) and the inner
law of their being (character and virtue). The results were predictable and
are predictable even now. When the Romans shamelessly deceived the
Carthaginians into giving up first their children and then their weapons
before destroying them, it was an outward manifestation of an inner
corruption; and it can just as well be said that the seeds of the final
decline and dissolution of the Republic were sown along with the salt in the
fields of Carthage.

Carnival Joins Holland America and Disney in Biological Warfare Against Cruisers!
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Dozens of people are sick aboard another ship at sea
Police in south Florida said 86 passengers are ill aboard the "Fascination" -- A Carnival cruise ship. It's due back in port Monday morning.
It's not clear if it's the same sickness plaguing other cruise lines.
"We got a call advising us that the Fascination was coming in with 86 people aboard with some type of illness," Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Ama Tangelo told The Miami Herald.
Attempts to reach Carnival spokesman Tim Gallagher were unsuccessful late Sunday, and officials from the U.S. Coast Guard declined comment.
Hundreds of people caught a contagious stomach virus aboard Holland America's "Amsterdam" and the Disney liner "Magic."
"Fascination", "Amsterdam", "Magic" - it's kinda like that Smiley-Face Bomber, they're trying to spell out the word "Family".
