It began as an international coterie of fellowship, but by the time the
evening had end, it had degenerated into 3 drunk Americans, 3 drunk
Scotsmen, and 6 drunk Japanese singing bad karaoke. It was a semi-formal
Japanese restaurant. You remove your shoes at the entrance and leave them
in lockers and pull out a wooden marker, about the size of a deck of
playing cards, to lock them in and. more importantly, remember which locker
has your shoes. We had two sunken tables in our private room, a little
crowded with three on each side, but roomy when one person moved to each
end. The picture menus were handy, but we allowed out host, "Ogawa-san" for
here, to order for all of us. I wish I could name all the dishes we had,
but I can remember only the appearances at this time. An omelet with pork
drizzled with a light brown mayonnaise. maybe called taipeiyaki? Chicken
wings on flat green bamboo skewers; chicken skins, chicken liver pate,
other nibbles, all on skewers, with a mildly hot red sauce. A butterflied
smoked fish, possibly a herring. We put soy sauce on that. Nori with enoki.
We barely caught the last train back before midnight. Much food, much fun,
rare moments of camaraderie. Bad singing.
