This is breath-taking. Who'd have thought Fascists would have found a use for modern art? Who'd have thought prisoners would be forced to watch Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel's film Un Chien Andalou as torture, living in cells inspired by Dali's paintings? No wonder current day Fascists regard art as a threat - they probably still think it's a weapon! Well, maybe they're right - but one rabbit's prison is another's Briar Patch.

More about mushrooms...

MushroomPeople.com has shiitake kits for $25! Since the spores could be damaged by extreme heat or cold (like who would worry about that on a day like this?), they'll only ship from March to June and from September to December. Here's a complete list of the kits they have available:

Portobello: These delectable, dark-gilled, tawny mushrooms can be grown right in your kitchen. Simple directions yield about 5 lbs in 3-4 fruitings. Unforgettable flavor!

$32 FOB

Button Mushroom: Agaricus bitorquis, the worldwide favorite. Mist with water and follow the directions for lush fruitings of this delicious mushroom.

$32 FOB

Shiitake: Lentinula edodes The true king of mushrooms, is our specialty. Combining a smokey-woodsy flavor with a firm, chewy texture and immune-stimulating properties, shiitake is becoming America's favorite "health mushroom".

$25 FOB

Oyster Mushrooms: Pleurotus ostreatus or pulmonarius have a uniquely fresh, anise-like flavor, grow in bouquets

$25 FOB

Reishi: Ganoderma lucidum, the Chinese "Mushroom of Immortality" of reputed high immuno-modulating potency, is used for teas and in capsules.

$25 FOB

Lion's Mane: Hericium erinaceus, also known as pom-pom mushrooms, look like clusters of cream-colored icicles, with a taste similar to lobster when lightly sauteed. Exotically delicious.

$25 FOB

They also sell many, many videos specifically related to growing your own shiitake under a page headed Masters Of Modern Shiitake. They're $20 each. Having a morel dilemma? Go here to learn how to grow them indoors! It's complicated, so be forewarned.

Engaging review: 'Beethoven': The First Modern

Beethoven's music, he reminds us, has survived through difficult times because it is the exemplar of noble aspiration -- and it is beautiful. It's ''a defense against the darkness.''

GoneGardening has discovered a method to grow shiitake mushrooms on sawdust! In just 6-8 weeks instead of the year it takes with spore plugs in oak logs! Did you know that each "wave" of mushroom growth is called a "flush" (fortunately, shiitake mushrooms are not grown on you-know-what, so our inner Beavis&Butthead remains quiet, for now...)? Unfortunately, the prices cited for their mushroom kits are all in British Pounds, meaning you probably can't buy them in the US. Customs is really finicky about agricultural products coming into the country. I can't find a link to order on their mushroom kit page anyway, just oyster mushrooms.
