Vanity
My attempt at blogwhoring. I found your site on weblogs. Somebody told me if I visited your site, that you would, in your search for vanity, look at your REFERRER log obsessively to find out from where are your grateful fans coming from. I just want you to look at my site, and I'm sure the cleverness of this ploy should be enough to spark your intrigue.
It did.

But why would you feel that way?
I don't know, it's something in my heart.
But it is stupid.
I know, but it is what I feel, it is not under my control.
You should know better.
I do, but that's for the mind, this is something I feel in my heart.
It is dangerous.
Yes, but if your heart finds no reason to beat, your mind won't last very long.
Stop that.
Okay.

Somebody Help Me!
I waited a long time to snap a picture of a bird at my feeder, then this one came along.
Now I haven't clue as to what it is. Twyla tells me it is "meat", but that's not the answer I'm looking for.

Schroedinger's Saddam
I don't have enough intelligence, uh, from reliable sources, to have conviction he is dead; I also don't have conviction that he is alive.

Disconnect
A conversation overheard.
A and B are idly leafing through a newspaper…
A: Is there anything in there about the weapons grade plutonium US tropps uncovered in Iraq?
B: I haven’t found anything yet…
A: They said they stuff was so high grade that it pegged the Geiger counters and the UN inspectors had been at that facility at least three times and totally missed it.
B: Here’s something…page D10, they totally buried the story!
C: (interjecting) Well maybe because it’s…
A: Yes, some paper in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Gazette or something, broke the story and then Fox picked up on it…
C: (continuing)…unconfirmed.
B: Look! They buried this story too…B6!
A: Well, that’s the Durham paper for you.
This is all gonna get a lot worse before it gets better, if it ever does. Rumors not headlined by media that source their stories are evidence of liberal suppression to A & B and responsible journalism to C. Fox News, Drudge, and Rush Limbaugh are the only sources A & B trust, to C they are right wing propaganda. A & B are convinced that the WMDs have been uncovered as soon as their trusted sources fling headlines at them; C waits for proof.
In the end, the rumors will suffice for A & B, as lack of proof will for C. Who is right? Well, A & B outnumber C, so it doesn’t matter.
(later) a postscript: Thanks to Jan at Secular Blasphemy, for referring this article in The Guardian which underlines the schism. Some more about disconnects at The Nation, The US vs. the UK. A quote:
Watching Fox, Serbs see a striking similarity to something in their own recent past: "Why, it's just like TV here under Milosevic!"

'Little Eva,' Singer of the "Loco-Motion," Dies In Kinston
KINSTON, N.C. -- Eva Narcissus Boyd, a teenager known as Little Eva when her first recording, "The Loco-motion," hit No. 1 in 1962, died Thursday after a long illness, her manager said.
The cause of death wasn't immediately available.
Boyd, a native of Belhaven, died at Lenoir Hospital in Kinston, manager Gary Cape said in a statement. Her age isn't immediately known, though various sources place her year of birth between 1943 and 1946.
Boyd was discovered by Carole King and Gerry Goffin after they hired her as a babysitter. They asked her to sing a demo of "The Loco-Motion," which they had written together.
They decided after hearing the demo to release it as a single.
Eva also had the Top 20 songs "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" and "Let's Turkey Trot."
Boyd is survived by daughters Josetta Hines and Dorethea Dobson; son, Darius Harris, 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
addendum:
There's never been a dance that's so easy to do It even makes you happy When you're feeling blue So come on come on do the loco-motion with me You gotta swing your hips now

From an exchange on Slate between Stephanie Gutmann and Debra Dickerson titled Women In Combat, this observation by Ms. Gutmann:
Yes, the guys in Private Lynch's unit got their asses taken captive, too.
Yes, they all got captured because they took a wrong turn. I wonder if Private Lynch asked them to stop and ask for directions?
