Okay, can’t surf and this hotel so it doesn’t matter that I forgot my
Ethernet cable. Reckon I’ll be lucky to get a 28.8 modem connection to send
up an email post.
I’m amazed by the ERJ planes American Eagle uses. The flight was scheduled
to take an hour and 15 minutes from RDU to CMH, but cut it in just under an
hour. It was not an uneventful hour. We knew it wouldn’t be when the pilot
came on the intercom and told us there were cumulus clouds in Ohio and the
ride might get “a little bumpy.” Hah, 10 minutes of random free fall bursts,
yawing and twisting, and rosary grabbing, but we made it. The ERJs are fast
(519 mph cruising) but light.
My rental car wasn’t ready. I’d ordered a small car on a special, but they
cut me a deal on a Rivera since they didn’t have it. Damn. When you first
get in a strange car, it always seems there’s an impatient driver behind
you. The seat was too far back. I started randomly hitting buttons beside
the seat and finally found one that scooted the seat forward. After driving
about a minute I thought, “Hey, why is my butt getting hot?” A little more
random button pushing got the seat warmer turned off.
I stopped at my sister’s house and, after some photo ops for her garden,
dog, and cat, we headed to Vaquero for Mexican food and beer. A woman there
recognized my sister and came over. Sister Ruth has done a fan newsletter
for OSU Women’s Basketball for years and Lynne and her have attended more
than a few final fours together. A lot of folks were there to have dinner
with former OSU superstar Katie Smith and “Helen”, a wonderful lady who has
been a legendary OSU fan longer than anyone cares to remember. Even though
they didn’t know me, they made me feel like we’ve all been friends longer
than Helen has been an OSU fan.
Finally, one more trip back to the hotel ro pick up a smoked salmon filet so
it could stay refrigerated until Friday when it will go to Toledo. I’m going
there in the morning…
