A picture named simmering sauerkraut.jpg

Some of Mom Wilson's smoked sausages huddle in a stovetop bed of simmering sauerkraut. Low heat, it's done when the sauerkraut turns slightly brown, concentrating the flavor. There's a little white wine in the pan liquor to mellow it out. Mellows out the cook too.

A picture named Clara.jpg

This is Clara, who greets you when you pass through Hans' and Bubbles' anteroom. I never got used to her, she always surprised me. Clara's wardrobe changes at the whims of the house's other residents.

Today I have about as much energy as Clara. I awoke at midnight on travel day yesterday and decided just to stay up to leave for the airport at 4am. HBO played a cheesy Stephen King movie, Thinner which would have been perfect if I'd wanted to go back to sleep.

To the airport. They first postponed, then cancelled the direct flight to RDU. No problem, they say, we'll route you through LaGuardia and you'll be there by 11:10. At that point, I was more concerned about the meats from Kilgus and Mom Wilson's than I was myself. I'd planned to be home by 8am and get them quickly to the refrigerator before taking a nap. Well, of course, the flight from LaGuardia also got postponed and I got nervous, having flown on Northwest and American Airlines other times when there were labor problems. Once I sat on the tarmack at Dallas-Ft. Worth for 3 hours and that was after an 11 hour flight from Tokyo. Another time, I spent an entire day in the Detroit Metropolitan Airport and experienced first hand every single reason it is almost always rated the worst airport in a non-third world country. No goats in the terminal, but there were a lot of Detroit Tigers fans.

This was nothing compared to those experiences, but I got home at 2pm and the nap was not to be. I had laundry to do before going to work today. While it was drying, I met Liz at the Armadillo and brought her some Mom Wilson bacon (the meat was still cold when I got home), a pepper mill from Penzey's, and a Starry Night coffee mug from the Van Gogh exhibition. We quaffed the kind nepenthe (Yeungling) and I was asleep before 8pm, awake again at midnight, back to sleep a few hours later, and then I overslept and got to work 2 hours late. Nobody seemed to care, but I sleep-walked through the day. As bad as jet lag.

If the airlines lining up for taxpayer-funded bailouts want my support, maybe they they should concentrate first on their service. Delays like this make them undependable for individuals counting on them for reliable service. They occur too frequently for a business stating they are struggling to get back on their feet, or their wings, whatever airlines do. Of course it doesn't matter what I think about bailouts, what matters is how powerful the airline lobbies are. If you can rig the game with a few smart simoleans targeted at centers of bureaucratic power, why should you carpet-bomb consumers with expensive dependable service?

I'll save the baggage destruction rant for another day, except to say every zipper on my luggage set has now been destroyed after 5 round trips. Two suitcases have had both zippers apparently cut off (I've tried to cut them myself with a wire-cutter, it takes that much abuse easily). Why do they want to destroy their passengers' luggage? Maybe Clara knows, but she tells me about as much as the airlines do about these "inconveniences". Ah, but when it's time to whine in Washington, it's time to dine with members of Congress. Gotta stop now or this will become a rant.

This is not one of my pictures. It's from a collection at Webshots Community by Les McDonald, guitarist for Johnny & The Hurricanes in 1965. Mr. Yorko was the original guitarist for the group.

Just saw a banner ad for The Deck Of Death, you know the one I mean. Fearless prediction: One of our major political parties will make a US-based one. Can't guess which one, maybe both will, and I'm willing to bet one will feature Tom Daschle, Tim Robbins, Martin Sheen, Ed Norton, Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon, Barbra Streisand, The Dixie Chicks, and, well, you get the picture. This is such a guaranteed money-maker that I'm tempted to produce it myself, so you don't even have to agree with the idea philosophically to go ahead with it. There's a ready-made consumer base and publicity will come for free on AM radio.

So, even if you're not a neocon, here's a chance to make a quick buck and laugh all the way to the bank. Don't waste any time! It's too obvious not to happen soon.

One thing to do in Deshler, OH, is to go to the Corn City Bar and get drunk. You can also buy FOOD there. Before bowling was invented, these activities formed the nucleus of social life in northwestern Ohio. On some days, the Corn City Bar would close and people would go to church instead. Say, check out that tool chest in the pickup! Beauty!
