The outline for Manifest Destiny.

The Project for the New American Century is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for America and for the world; that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle; and that too few political leaders today are making the case for global leadership.

The Project for the New American Century intends, through issue briefs, research papers, advocacy journalism, conferences, and seminars, to explain what American world leadership entails. It will also strive to rally support for a vigorous and principled policy of American international involvement and to stimulate useful public debate on foreign and defense policy and America's role in the world.

Basically, the idea is complete world domination through military power. If you don't like that idea, too bad. Get over it.

There used to be a video poker game, before they became illegal in NC, at my favorite Carrboro bar, before it succumbed to urban rot, that was a favored diversion of patrons with limits and the owner without. He collected a percentage. We jokingly called the machine his 401(k). The bartender was even more realistic. He called it "video crack."

Fat is good at WD-50. I have to admit being partial to the fatty ham hocks and pigs' knuckles, which are not mentioned in the NYT article. Seasoned and aged pork fat has always been one of my guilty pleasures. Guilty on two counts: Jack Sprat's wife was never regarded as a gourmand and the health risks of fat have been documented to the point of overkill. My mother always used to say bacon was a waste of money because there's "not much meat in it." Still, I've always relished the the silvery layer on the edges of my steaks and have gone into ecstasy over hog jowl simmered with greens. Now I feel vindicated. Even lard, the epitome of bad health and bad taste is making a comeback on both counts:

"Lard is one of the soapboxes I like to get on," Ms. Corriher said. "Yes, lard is 100 percent fat. So is olive oil." And according to the Agriculture Department, lard is lower in saturated fat, and higher in mono- and poly-unsaturated fats than butter. The department's nutrient database also reports that it is lower in cholesterol.

Dr. Frank B. Hu, an associate professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, said research shows that lard and butter "aren't public enemy No. 1 any more." It is instead the hydrogenated fats — margarine, for instance, the so-called healthy fat of the 1970's — that have turned out to be the real bad guys of fat, he said.

Mental Note: It's time to order a pork belly and make pancetta.
