Independence Day For Dummies

The Declaration of Independence, 1776
Thomas Jefferson wrote this document. It consists of three parts: a statement of human rights, the reasons for declaring independence, and the declaration itself. In his opening comments, Jefferson stated that:

1. all men are created equal and are endowed with certain unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
2. governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed.
3. if governments become destructive, people have the right to replace them with new forms of government

Here are a few of the grievances that Jefferson cited:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

The Declaration Of Independence may be read in its entirety here.

Mark Hoback has asked me to be guest editor for next weekend’s Virtual Occuquan. This ought to be fun! Since Friday is Independence Day, I thought I’d give y’all a heads-up that I’ll especially on the lookout for some good old-fashioned red (you can't see white on white, so just imagine it) and blue patriotism (If you’re not American, like Jan Haugland isn’t, for example, just try to fake it or maybe get patriotic about your own country!). Alternatively, you might ponder what “Independence” means, what we’re really supposed to be celebrating, which is declaring our freedom from George III who “was afflicted with porphyria, a maddening disease which disrupted his reign as early as 1765. Several attacks strained his grip on reality and debilitated him in the last years of his reign.” George died at Windsor Castle on January 29, 1820, and hasn’t fucked with us since then…
