Mars will soon be the closest to Earth that it has been in 60,000 years, but it's still 34.6 million miles away. To believe it is within reach, go here, and read A Princess Of Mars. If you have as much desire as did John Carter, perhaps you can go there on Tuesday. With a little bit of luck, I’ll be there to greet you…
As I stood thus meditating, I turned my gaze from the landscape to the heavens where the myriad stars formed a gorgeous and fitting canopy for the wonders of the earthly scene. My attention was quickly riveted by a large red star close to the distant horizon. As I gazed upon it I felt a spell of overpowering fascination--it was Mars, the god of war, and for me, the fighting man, it had always held the power of irresistible enchantment. As I gazed at it on that far-gone night it seemed to call across the unthinkable void, to lure me to it, to draw me as the lodestone attracts a particle of iron.
My longing was beyond the power of opposition; I closed my eyes, stretched out my arms toward the god of my vocation and felt myself drawn with the suddenness of thought through the trackless immensity of space. There was an instant of extreme cold and utter darkness
…I opened my eyes upon a strange and weird landscape. I knew that I was on Mars; not once did I question either my sanity or my wakefulness. I was not asleep, no need for pinching here; my inner consciousness told me as plainly that I was upon Mars as your conscious mind tells you that you are upon Earth. You do not question the fact; neither did I.

Buns & Sentries
Top: My first batch of burger buns from the new pan. The larded round roast, ready for the rotisserie, guards them from the rear.
Bottom: 15 minutes later, the buns are done. Now Mr. Yuengling, ever watchful, observes them on the right.

False Hope
When I snapped the picture (inset, lower right - with the "not equal" symbol), I thought I had a cardinal climber blossom. However, when I blew it up, it was obviously a morning glory.
Cardinal climbers are growing in a window box on the left, morning glories in one on the right. They met at the top and intertwined. I'm still waiting for the cardinal climber to bloom. When it does, its blossoms will look like the one inset at top center (with the "equal" sign emanating from its unmistakable leaves).
The white blossoms are from chives, which have waited until late summer to produce slender blooming stalks. Wonder how they would taste?
