She Said Her Stereo Was Four-Way
Reorganizing, cleaning, just chuggin’ along, I ran across two unlabeled CDs with a paper insert in the jacket that read simply “Apostrophe: Quad => DTS” and another that said “Overnight Sensation: Quad => DTS”.
Hmmm…two Zappa albums released in the heyday of Quadraphonic Sound. Oh, yes, a Zappaphile named Bill sent those to me last summer while I was busy dubbing some VHS tapes to SVCD for us. I didn’t have DTS sound then, ah, but now I do.
I popped in Apostrophe and next thing you know I dreamed I was an Eskimo, trudgin’ across the tundra, strictly commercial sounds playing in Dolby Digital 3/2 (not DTS – I coulda played these on my old system).
Then the skipping started. I should have known as much – how did this guy cram all those channels on a CD? I popped it out and cleaned it up a bit. That got me past the first annoying skips, but by the time I was eating St. Alfonso’s Pancake Breakfast, where I stole the marge-a-reen, the speakers were popping and the cats had hid behind the sofa.
So I put in Overnight Sensation. It played perfectly. One last effort on Apostrophe – burn a copy very slowly. That worked! I’m listening to the title track, an instrumental, right now – we’ve made it almost all the way through and the cats are relaxing on the sofa. Ich bin der Chrome Dinette! – whoops, wrong album.

Submissions Please!
Once again, I am acting co-editor of Virtual Occoquan. The next issue, due out this weekend, has no theme. That sounds kinda Zen, doesn’t it? Like, hey man, what do you call a river when it has no water? Don’t answer that! You’re supposed to be meditating!
…(time passes, like an old Redskins' quarterback)
Now that you are calmed down, consider this: Anything Goes! Kinda like one of those Going Out Of Business Sales where Everything Goes – but here some things must stay, because the Zen Diagram of Anything does not completely fill the Venn Diagram of Everything, being more like a tributary to that river we were discussing earlier.
If you have written an article in the past two weeks that you believe might fit, loosely or tightly, in the general category “no theme,” please submit it to Mark or myself (just send a link to “Email this blog’s author” on the left side of our blogs). There’s no way we can reject it as not fitting in - but we might not include it if the writing or idea is really shitty, then again we might include it just because of that!
I’m also surfing some of my favorite blogs and looking at some new ones for material. The goalpost is high – each new issue must be The Best Issue Ever™ while remaining Fair And Balanced.

Coming home early today for a long weekend, I got a nice surprise! A new late summer blossom in the window box. I had now idea what it was until I snapped it and saw the leaves - portulaca. A few of them grew from seeds and I never expected them to survive. Usually the stems coil along the ground instead of standing tall like this one.
