A picture named Joyce Chen spiral slicer.jpg

Okay, so it's not a Benriner, but it didn't cost 90 bucks either. At just $15 (at Linens 'n' Things), this Joyce Chen spiral slicer ought to do a number on horseradish next time I'm in a Bavarian state of mind. It passed the potato test...

A picture named Hurricane Isabel with Twyla.jpg

At the Armadillo last evening, all the TVs were tuned to the Weather Channel. While at BJ's yesterday, I saw 12-packs of D-cells and picked one up without a second thought (not my usual 12-pack). Folks at work spoke of testing their generators and making sure they had fuel on hand.

When you live in Hurricane Country, the words "Category 5" have a special magic. The grocery store shelves are still stocked with milk, eggs, and bread - so the panic is still in the early stages (the Carolina joke is that people use adverse weather as an excuse to make French toast).

When Fran hit us, I was without electricity for 10 days, Floyd only 3 - but everything east of Raleigh was underwater. Sometimes you go to the beach, sometimes it comes to you. The ground is waterlogged and the trees are weakened from two ice storms last winter. On the bright side, hurricane center forecasters are predicting a gradual weakening of Isabel over the next few days.
