Dick Cheney repeated the oft-told lie about the Iraqi/al Qaeda Czech connection to Tim Russert on Sunday. Apparently no one had told him that Paul Wolfowitz has backed off this claim, probably figuring that fooling 70% of the people for about a year is the best you can hope for.

Now even Donald “For Goodness Sake” Rumsfeld has seen the light in the tunnel on the road to Damascus and says he “sees no connection.” It’s hard to believe Cheney is that far out of the loop, makes you wonder if he’ll be replaced on the ticket next year - for “reasons of health,” of course.

Wonder if he’s kneeling and praying to portraits of Spiro Agnew in the halls of his official home at the Zen Naval Observatory? - maybe with Bill Safire (who helped spread that lie back in the glory days when we were “getting impatient with Saddam Hussein”) standing in for Henry The K.

Quick, someone tell Cheney the line has changed!

A picture named making couscous.jpg

Another season, another reason

For makin’ couscous

You ever wonder how they make that stuff? This site shows you all the equipment on an interactive diagram and most of the links work. You can see the machines! Learning about this became a priority after seeing a bag of fregola, toasted couscous, at MurrayHill5. I don’t think I’ll make my own.

The other news is the apparent comeback of Adrienne Barbeau on HBO’s new series Carnivale. Liz and I just watched the DVR time-shifted version of the opener and we’re hooked.  Adrienne Barbeau, for possibly misguided reasons, has achieved a cult following in the years since she burst onto the TV entertainment scene playing Carol Trainor on Maude. Now she’s comin’ back to kick some ass!

Probably not the ass-kicker it once was is Isabel. She’s been downgraded to a Category 2. Hah! We use Category 2 storms as an excuse to wash our cars down here! CNN is still playing it up like it’s a major story, so news must be slow. Isabel is a has-been before she happened.

Just in case there weren’t enough spurious links in this post, here’s one more

A picture named ugly side of the turkey.jpg

This is the "ugly" side of the turkey breast, showing the scars left after the butcher twine has been removed. It's going in to work for a potluck today. That is a good thing. I could never eat this much turkey by myself, but it's still a lot of fun to go through the entire process. The only labor-intensive part is at the very beginning. I wanted to make one of these ever since I heard David Rosengarten talk about domestic hard ciders on A Splendid Table last week. He offhandedly mentioned using them for marinades and the idea landed in fertile soil.
