Now even Hamburger Helper, for chrissakes, is trying to steal 'Ove' Glove's thunder! Hamburger Helper - the antichrist of foodies! It was bad enough to have Tom Arnold doing an 'Ove' Glove ripoff for Arby's, but Hamburger Helper? Sheeesh!

RoundRaoul: she wasn’t even aware of it!

RoundRaoul: no, she’s great

RoundRaoul: just doesn't have much time to watch the news

paulhinr: that's more dedication

RoundRaoul: very young, really

RoundRaoul: her boss is giving her this one to grow on

RoundRaoul: but still keeping an overview

RoundRaoul: zzzzz....

paulhinr: news: power outages increasing

RoundRaoul: here too

paulhinr: trees are starting to bring down power lines

RoundRaoul: im the only one in the state with power

paulhinr: some people here lost it for a month

paulhinr: they were at the hurricane party at the bar last night

RoundRaoul: seriously

RoundRaoul: hurricane party at downunder

paulhinr: one guy lost 200 trees on 2 acres

paulhinr: and both cars crushed

RoundRaoul: 200 trees?

paulhinr: last chance to party before the storm

paulhinr: yeah, his place was a mess

RoundRaoul: he needed to thin out

paulhinr: all older trees

paulhinr: just heard a tree come down outside

RoundRaoul: only the wood die young

paulhinr: just now <giggle>

RoundRaoul: yeah,

paulhinr: a crack like a rifle

RoundRaoul: let me take a shot out my window from my desk

RoundRaoul: k

RoundRaoul: well the satellite keeps flickering

RoundRaoul: ...and tv dude is saying

RoundRaoul: "the worst is yet to come"

paulhinr: sometime I'll figure out animated gifs and get the trees dancing up there...

paulhinr: oh shit

RoundRaoul: i want to get more pictures

paulhinr: we're having some major gusts right now. Weird. Mostly calm, then incredible gusts.

paulhinr: okay. I just took one myself - will post it

RoundRaoul: you are used to this.

paulhinr: the hell i am - I’m a Yankee

RoundRaoul: really?

paulhinr: blizzards I'm used to

paulhinr: yechhh

RoundRaoul: double that

RoundRaoul: They took down the Tiki restaurant

paulhinr: I loved that place

RoundRaoul: I was tripped out there once

paulhinr: it was like an acid trip

RoundRaoul: the best

paulhinr: thunder and lightning every 20 minutes

RoundRaoul: absurd

RoundRaoul: no lightning here

paulhinr: that drink that they present to the "god" at the front of the restaurant

RoundRaoul: the clouds are moving very fast

RoundRaoul: oh yeah'

paulhinr: (thunder and lightning at the tiki)

paulhinr: fake

RoundRaoul: the flaming whatthefuck

paulhinr: (my picture didn't capture the tree angles)

RoundRaoul: the cute reporter is talking about the huge rumble

RoundRaoul: she should be wearing chiffon

RoundRaoul: it would look good wet

RoundRaoul: bush just declared NC a disaster area

paulhinr: we reciprocate

RoundRaoul: not yet, but im just on my fourth bourbon

RoundRaoul: i always innately knew it

paulhinr: this is my third hurricane

RoundRaoul: do they just get better with time?

paulhinr: Fran was the "best"

paulhinr: I didn't sleep a wink

RoundRaoul: Like I said...

paulhinr: some guy who is a native here just shrugs them off

paulhinr: says it's more a media thing

RoundRaoul: not from my window

paulhinr: especially now, with all the advance warning

RoundRaoul: they just said it will continue to get worse for the next 8

RoundRaoul: we have 4 floors

RoundRaoul: my office is on 4

RoundRaoul: it is about time to move downstairs.

RoundRaoul: the aftermath

paulhinr: I ought to be able to get some fallen tree pictures by then

paulhinr: this is really lightweight

RoundRaoul: not for us

paulhinr: but some trees always get it

RoundRaoul: or not for me

RoundRaoul: me me me

paulhinr: yeah - the eye is coming at y'all

RoundRaoul: goodnight. try not to die

The trees are really dancin' out there - I heard a couple of distant cracks, like rifle shots, that are the sound of branches or trunks splitting. Obviously, we still have electricity. The birds are still coming to the feeders, so I'm leaving those outside for now. May not bring them in at all.

A picture named obviously inferior bread.jpg

Not many people realize it, but in a pinch you can make your own bread after the store sells out. It requires difficult to locate ingredients such as flour, salt, water, and yeast. I’ve produced an obviously primitive example here. Now I sleep as the storm rolls in. Good Night!

11:48am - lights flickered, a little earlier than expected. I hope there's time to bake the two baguettes finishing their second rise. WUNC went off briefly after a distant lightning flicker, maybe hitting their tower(?) and putting a little stress on the omniscient power grid.

At the Armadillo Hurricane Party last night (complete with King Mackeral hurricane music, always ending with the exhilarant post-storm optimism of Beautiful Day - it's a Carolina tradition), Jeff confided that his son had volunteered for a convoy out of Tikrit after becoming bored with signal corps duty in one of Saddam's mansions. Like any young recruit, he was unconcerned with danger and reported back to Dad that, yes, they had taken some fire but that was "way back at the rear of the convoy." Jeff is way conservative, being as pro-Bush as Karl Rove, but I still empathize with his inner contradictions. So, when I read a story like this, I hope for the very best. Blood is thicker than political abstractions.

Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay

Ratings pressure has forced networks to eschew the "man in the storm" cliches and opt for a talent contest in the hurricane's path. Here Larry Burnside does a credible Otis Redding despite 60mph winds. Competiton is stiff, however, they say an earlier contestant really blew 'em away.

(More or less waiting to lose power here, as in Occoquan, VA, it's pretty much down to a matter of when..)

The Small Kitchen Gourmet

A fantastic resource for serious cooking, especially for apartment dwellers. I "discovered" Claire's site in the comments section of Neva's blog entry on undesirable elasticity in flour tortillas. Surfing over to Claire's tortilla recipe, I hit the Home link and a veritable cornucopia appeared - Poof! - just like that! I'm not kiddin'!

A picture named most of the food remains.jpg

As long as there is power + (cable modem or phone), I can keep posting. Just breezy out there now and winds aren't expected to top 60 mph here.

Even the stores are adequately stocked. Only the bread took a noticeable hit. Most the cheap stuff is gone, but there is a large selection of Cobblestone Mill (at the far right of this picture). Plenty of bologna, eggs, and milk too - but I couldn't find any thick-sliced bacon.

I'm leaving the bird feeders out until the last possible minute. The birds are still feeding. After the last two storms hit here, the birds just disappeared for a week or so. I wonder where they go.

In the past month it has been revealed that the Saudis provide 50% of Hamas funding and that our “strong partner” also financed the 9/11 “untidiness”. Most of the hijackers on that fateful day were Saudi nationals and the government frequently kidnaps and tortures British citizens on work visas in Saudi Arabia…

Treasury Chief Touts Saudi Aid Vs. Terror

By ADNAN MALIK

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia -- U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow on Wednesday said Saudi Arabia is a strong partner in the fight against terror and that "significant progress" has been made in halting the cash flow to terrorists.

Next up, Snow will explain how Japan helped us win World War II.
