A Better Way

I never heard of Greg Brown until there was a comment here about an old posting about one of my all time favorites songs, They All Went To Mexico. The person posting the comment was a friend of Greg Brown, who wrote the tune.

I googled “Greg Brown” and eventually ended up ordering this CD at Amazon – but it’s not just a CD! It includes a DVD of some performances in the same case.

This what you’d call “value-added.” The music is great and the CD didn’t have one of those sticky thingies to frustrate you when you try to open it up. Look again, RIAA, there is marketing innovation out there making laughingstock out of you while you waste your dwidling resources inventing 21st century Gestapo tactics to nail Grandma if she inadvertently downloads Britney. A Bobby Dylan quote comes to mind…”something is happening here, but you don't know what it is, do you, Mister Jones?”

And, speaking of Dylan, maybe you should be cultivating people like the producer who discovered him, John Hammond, instead of pumping payola into Clear Channel. There are people who know shit from shinola and they actually buy music. Music is food for the soul and you can't sell it for very long believing it's like supersized fries, because hungry souls will wander. When they find better food in the dumpster, they'll feed there.

A picture named ew5000.jpg

This is the HP ew5000. When it came out last year, it sold for around $300, but now it goes for about $130. If you have an 802.11b router, it will play MP3s and photo slide shows residing on your host computer over your home entertainment center. Onscreen TV menus will let you choose your selections. Newer variations that use “a” or “g” wireless networking are available and with 5 times the bandwidth they’ll also handle Windows Media video files, but they cost more. I ordered an ew5000 today because the idea of using a(nother) remote to play tunes on my stereo, jukebox style, was irresistible. When I get it working, I’ll post an update.
