A picture named Pabst - Best.jpg

The Beast

Fifi sent me an email mentioning this sidebar in the March 2004 Saveur. Her question is whether Milwaukee’s Best beer (see Twyla picture below) might have gotten its name from Frederick Pabst’s in-laws.

Google says “no.”

Milwaukee's Best is a former A. Gettelman Brewing Co. brand name. Miller purchased the small Gettelman brewery, its next door neighbor in Milwaukee, in 1961. Miller's introduction of a reformulated Milwaukee's Best in 1984 followed the successful introduction of Meister Brau and at the same time gave Miller a one-two punch in the popular-priced segment. Miller brews Milwaukee's Best Light, a low-calorie line extension. Introduced in 13 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states in 1986, Milwaukee's Best Light distribution was expanded in 1987 to an additional 18 states. Milwaukee's Best was the seventh best-selling brand in the United States in 1992.
