When 51% is seen as a mandate to "legally" force their intolerance on the unwilling and tolerant 48%, you have what Tocqueville and John Stuart Mill identified as the tyranny of the majority. Over 200 years ago, The US Constitution sought to remedy this type of imbalance with a complex system of checks and balances, but now a bunch of Texas con men and snake oil salesmen have hijacked the system.
Their leader, in a victory speech packed with vacuous homilies, said the following:
A new term is a new opportunity to reach out to the whole nation. We have one country, one Constitution and one future that binds us.
This is pure bullshit, of course. Already today he is laying out the groundwork for undermining Social Security, prattling on about "political capital*," and giving more tax breaks to the people who financed his re-election. In short, the man is a proven liar and he’s at it again. He has nurtured these divisions. He is the teenager who murdered his parents, asking to be let out of jail so he can attend their funeral. Ignore him.
Submission is out of the question. Our political system has failed its prime directive, which is that government should basically leave people the fuck alone. Civil war is also out of the question – mainly because all the big army bases are in red states. Wars are also very "untidy" and I’m basically opposed to them. Still, what we have here is the same basic situation faced by the colonists paying taxes to George III – taxation without representation. The right wing agenda will be crammed down our throats and we’ll be subsidizing it with weekly deductions from our paychecks, the 48% of us from blue states – geographical or of mind.
It sounds pretty bleak, but between submission and war there is a third alternative: economic pressure. That brings us to The Angry Bear. In a beer-inspired moment of clarity, he noted that 13 cents out of every blue state tax dollar flows to red states and came up with his own remedial action:
Let Illinois, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Washington, California, and the rest of the Blue States keep their own damn money. Let the Red states keep out the gays, which is apparently their highest priority. Wait ten years and see who comes out ahead. And yes, this is bad policy. But it's clearly great politics. And winning on the political dimension is, sadly, a necessary condition for winning on the policy dimension.
Businesses that already realize the economic benefits of diversity would eventually move to blue states, with jobs following, in case you didn’t catch his drift. Rob Salkowitz has grabbed this lateral from the Bear and ran it for a touchdown, spiked it, then picked it up and batted it over the fence for a home run. If you read nothing else in your pathetic liberal life, make it a point to click on the link and read this article: United We Fall. Read the comments too. It is a brilliant outline for maintaining tolerance in blue states while allowing the red states to wallow in their ideological intolerance.
In short, it's time for Daddy to cut off Junior's allowance.
*Hosea 8:7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
*also - Galatians 6:7: Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
