A picture named figurehead cardinal.jpg

Looking much like a ship’s figurehead, this cardinal seems more interested in posing for the camera than eating free sunflower seeds. Although the weather has been quite chilly the past few days, the remaining birds seem determined to stick it out in Carolina. When I first started watching my FeederCam at work, people would ask about how much seed the birds ate and how much it cost. I thought they were pointing out my fiscal foolhardiness by bringing this up but, as it turned out, they were pricing it out. After seeing this particular feeder thwart a squirrel or two, a couple of my work mates went out and bought one for their own backyard. Others watch the screen and ask for help in identifying birds they see. I’m not much of an expert, but we can usually Google up a matching image. Of all the foolish things I have done this year, I am most proud of the webcam on the squirrel-proof feeder. It has gotten many birds fed in central NC by the interest it has sparked. Usually you have to plants seeds to make something grow; apparently it’s good enough to feed them to birds. Of course, it has provided me with entertainment too – and a touch of home at the office.
