H. David Dalquist, 86, creator of the famous Bundt cake pan, died Jan. 2 at his home in Edina, Minn. He had a heart ailment.

Do not miss the choucroute in Alsace article by R. W. Apple Jr. in the food section of the July 5, NYT. There is more to be done with sauerkraut than a kraut dog (but that’s a good start). I learned from the article that Captain Cook took sauerkraut on his voyages, along with the limes that gave Brit seamen their nickname “Limeys”. They both prevent vitamin C and help prevent scurvy. Then I thought about how Germans got the nickname “Krauts.” Sticks and stones, you know, and now scurvy….
