The Blizzard of 2005

As you can see, it was a fearsome storm. The first flakes began to fall innocently around 11:30 am EST, giving little warning of what was to happen. By 12:30, 11 schools announced early closings. Parents were forced to leave work early to pick up their children. By 1:00, there were over 200 closings announced as a wave of fear cascaded over Research Triangle Park. By 1:30, the storm had passed, but there was a sense of panic at work. What if the snow were to melt in the 25-degree weather and the slush were to freeze again overnight? I knew what to expect. I left work an hour early and waited in the stalled traffic going nowhere. I thought the first rush would be over by then, but no. All the evening traffic in Central NC hit the mostly cleared roads at the same time. It took me 2 hours to get home – a trip that normally takes 20 minutes. I wished I had an automatic shift as I held in the clutch, lifted it, coasted 50 feet max, then braked again to sit and wait. All because everybody decided to shut everything down at the same time. When I got home, I took the snapshot. A storm to remember, it was.

It’s been slow around here with Liz back in the UK visiting her Mum. With only myself to cook for, it has been mainly sandwiches grilled in the panini maker for food to play with. The best part of those is the mustard. I’ve been mixing a tablespoon each of gray poupon (bought with a gray coupon), mayonnaise, horseradish, and plain ol’ French’s mustard. That steams through the bread and meat in the press with an assist from the pickle juice from a kosher slice. It has a totally different character that way.

Yawn. Pretty boring, eh?

It finally got cold here, about 15 F right now. The blog has been slow because I’ve been studying music software about 5 hours each night after I get home from work. It’s really more like playing with electric trains than studying. I wonder what Bach would have done if he had these programs. I wonder if he would be posting Acid Loops on the acidfanatic website. He might be able to give Danny Elfman and John Williams a run for their money doing high-dollar film scores. He might even win an Oscar! I know one thing for sure, he wouldn’t be a church organist because nobody can afford those anymore. You don’t need ‘em anyway. Get some pimply teenager with an out of tune twelve string to play something contemporary. Oh well…
