A Little Diversion

Took a break last night to visit the Blue Bayou in Hillsborough, just a few miles up the road. Met some friends there to hear Clark Stern, an outstanding pianist, playing in what could best be described as a honky tonk atmosphere on a beat up old piano while a poker tournament was being noisily played in the rest of the room. Exactly four of us were there to hear him play, maybe 30 poker players and kibitzers. I woman came up to us and asked us (the audience) if we “played.” It didn’t sound quite right, the way she asked, and she must have caught the looks of bafflement. She meant poker, of course, not music.

The piano has out-of-tune keys and a few notes that just go “clunk,” but a musician of Clark’s abilities is able to make music out of even that. Outstanding. I recommend visiting his web site just to hear St, James Infirmary. Blue Bayou’s site where you can see the blues schedule they maintain, featuring occasional national acts.

Friends of mine who’ve gone there always mention that they nearly hit a deer on the way home at some time or another. It happened to me too, on my very first visit. That’s a good sign.
