Sourdough update: This is the stuff made with grapes that I started on Monday. That’s day 1. On days 2 and 3, you just let it sit. This is day four, the first day you mess with it again – by stirring in one cup flour and one cup water. You mix them together first, of course, say I like I knew that – but even though I once kept a sourdough alive for 5 years, I was always stirring them in separately, obediently following the instructions. The flour forms big globs that way and it really works better to mix them together.
I wanted to say something silly here, like when I lifted the cover it looked like flour and water mixed together with some grapes floating in it. Actually, it did. But there was much more - that unmistakable aroma of sourdough is already there and it still has just under two weeks to ferment. There’s more – I got a taste and it has a good rich sour flavor that’s going to make some mighty tasty baguettes down the road.
Once again, “all we have to do is nothing” for the next few days. It may bubble up, but I put it in a very oversized container to, uh, hopefully contain that. The instructions say that mold may form on top – yechh! – but just scrape it off if it does.

Today’s Yiddish Lesson is the expression farbissina punim, shown to us here by Commissioner Bud Selig, as he sits patiently through US House of Representative hearings concerning our National Pastime - the sport formerly known as Major League Baseball, but now more accurately described as an unholy Gomorrah of illegal drug abuse. As you can tell from his body language, Bud is wide open to any suggestions on how to clean up his den of iniquity, but it is his facial expression that teaches us our Yiddish expression of the day - which translates roughly to “sourpuss.”
