A picture named Volga Boatman.jpg

115 cardinals today began the extremely serious business of selecting a new pope by whimsically singing the Volga Boatman song and doing the electric boogaloo which, you might recall, has a long and ceremony-laden history rivaling that of the conclave itself.

No cell phones, please!

“Kute Kudzu”

Wisteria is everywhere around here this time of year. They say that when God forgets how to be omnipresent, he asks wisteria for a little help.

Habemus Pappadums

Bynum, NC is a tiny town with twisty roads and an unusual personality, dominated by the folk art of resident Clyde Jones. Nearly every house has one of his critters in the yard, a gift from Clyde. He doesn’t sell his artwork, only gives it away! We drove through today en route to Fearrington Village, another tourist attraction just a few miles down the road from here.

On the way home, we stopped at a grocery and picked up a mélange of greens – mustard, turnip, collards, and the infamous “greasy greens” (mainly dandelion). Liz came over after we got home and later in the afternoon, after a social drink or two, she, Sister Bubbles, Sister Ruth and myself feasted on slow-roasted duckling, greens, and boiled baby potatoes. The ducks took over four hours, so we snacked on fried pappadums with pear slices, cabernet paste, and silky Maytag blue cheese. Mercy. Those things came from at least four stores: Fowler’s (in Durham), Whole Foods, A Southern Season, and Weaver Street Market.

The cool thing about visiting those stores, as we have the past couple days, is the grazing. Being around all that gourmet food gets the stomach growling, but all of them have samples of this that and the other for tasting. Without the gratis free course we probably would have surrendered to the hunger pangs and gone to McDonalds’, fer chrissakes.
