Officials Don’t Say
Josh Marshall seems to be the only person having the same suspicions I have…
As the riots in Afghanistan became a major story late last week, it occurred to me that the only way out of the mess was to impeach the source of the Quran desecration story. Miraculously, almost instantaneously, that happened and now Newsweek retracts the story. This seems to be a story for domestic consumption, putting the focus on shoddy journalism instead of the credibility we lost with bogus weapons of mass destruction, fake al Qaeda connections, and the miserable torture that was endemic at Gitmo and Abu Ghraib.
Of course, the anonymous source of the story is going to change the story. If he weren’t willing to be named originally, he would certainly fear being exposed now. The domestic benefit is for the Bush administration to choke off another news source that has printed a story critical of its policies. That was the first reaction of the rioters, who no longer believe anything our government says. We have the mirror image in our country – people who are willing to believe anything it says and seek to destroy anything that begs to differ. That’s dangerous. It does nothing to restore the credibility we’ve lost outside our borders – and that’s the real problem.
