Shoura Demands US Apology
P.K. Abdul Ghafour, Arab News

JEDDAH, 16 May 2005 — The 150-member Shoura Council yesterday strongly condemned the reported desecration of the Holy Qur’an at the hands of US officials at Guantanamo Bay and asked the United States, if the incident was true, to apologize in order to avoid hatred and violence.

The Shoura urged the US authorities to launch a prompt investigation into a May 9 Newsweek magazine report that investigators probing abuses at the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay found that interrogators had desecrated the Qur’an to rattle Muslim prisoners.

“If the report proved true, it would become important that an apology be issued and addressed to Muslims all over the world to avoid increasing the hatred between nations and followers of religious faiths as well,” the Shoura said in a statement.

The White House did not get involved after the murders in Afghanistan - arguably unrelated according to General Richard Myers, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff - but went full tilt boogie once the Saudis got ticked!

Now, in keeping with the new fair and balanced outlook of this blog, here’s a little Ann Coulter:

We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war.

This is a larded roast after cooking. The red splotches are not rare beef - they are the lean portions of the bacon strips.

“I am not now, nor have I ever been…an oil driller.”

-          “Gorgeous” George Galloway, MP testifying before the US Senate on his role in the oil-for-food scandal.

This man is never at a loss for words. Expect at least five more headline quotes before he’s done today.

(Update: I thought I heard "driller," but the transcripts all say "trader"...)

Throw The Newsweek Down The Well…

Here’s a novel idea to prevent potentially damaging apocryphal stories coming out of secluded US detention camps: Open them up to reporters and human rights organizations. Allow Red Crescent to interview prisoners there and let an objective panel investigate their complaints. If everything is on the up and up, nobody has anything to hide. It is the shroud of secrecy covering the detention centers that leave their goings-on subject to speculation and gives tacit credibility to wild stories.

I really can’t believe the subscription rate for Newsweek is high enough in Afghanistan that it is a significant factor nor that people there parse each word, seeking truth. All Newsweek did is create a meme. If there were daylight at Gitmo, it would have been laughed off. It is the uncertain darkness, the absence of oversight that fuels fallacious memes. If everyone can plainly see what’s going on, the ugly rumors will disappear.

Now, for some balance, check out this widely-linked article:

We Americans need to get our priorities straight. We are at war with Islam. I want President Bush, Secretary Rice, the media, and the bleeding-heart liberals to stop apologizing to Islam and I want it to stop right now. Islamics are slaughtering people all over the world. Islam has threatened to make our streets “run red with American blood.” A Saudi Islamic cleric gave bin Laden permission to detonate a nuke in a major American city. Enough already!

There you have it. Fair and balanced, just like Fox is and NPR will soon be.
