The Present-Day Composer Refuses To Die

This is dedicated to Birdie. In case you missed it on BoingBoing, the full story is here. The graphic shown here, by Zappa alpha-fan Matt Groening, can be viewed full size here. I’m late to the party, but I bring a nice bottle.

Zen Again

Once again, here is the opening bell/glass harmonica sound to the John Cale piece I started analyzing last week.  This time, however, there’s a difference. These are pretty waveforms and all, but they’re no good unless you hear them, right? So I got some server space from godaddy.com and now your can hear them. This sound repeated 4 times for 8 measures at the very beginning of “Zen.” It’s very soft so I cranked it up a bit so you can hear and see it better. Click here to hear it.

Did you hear the piano I was talking about? No? Well, just to prove I’m not nutso, I’ve removed most of the bell sound from this sample. This sound occurs about halfway through the previous sample and it’s way, way down in the mix.

Listen also for the rumbling bass is the first sample. This is an eerie combination and it sets up a feeling of premonition for the music to follow.
