A picture named Emma Joseph.jpg

I’m In Love With Emma

Since I’m usually up on the early side of 4am, I’ve become a big fan of BBC News World Service presenter Emma Joseph. I don’t even pay attention to the content; I am fascinated by her delivery. Her pronunciation is nearly flawless, but the shifting pattern of accents through the words she speaks reminds me of a jazz musician taking a well-worn standard to another level by subtly shifting the beat. It’s the incongruity. That pleasant voice, randomly accenting syllables, in the midst of proper BBC Brits effortlessly presenting the Queen’s English on a gilded plaque that gives Emma Joseph the maximum entertainment quotient.

Listen to an Emma Joseph sample here.
