This is the sound of a needle dropping on a vinyl LP. It lasts about 3/10 of a second and it’s still one of my favorite sounds. Big Jackets, good artwork, liner notes big enough to read. You can still purchase vinyl online at vinyl.com. It’s a minor pain to convert LPs to CD – you need a turntable with a pre-amp, a sound card with RCA plug inputs, and software to do minor edits (and remove sounds like this one), but many good records still haven’t been released on CD. Tonight, I’m burning Church Of Anthrax, a 1970 collaboration between John Cale and minimalist composer Terry Riley. Maybe I'll leave the needle drop in - another Cale mentor, John Cage, would approve.
