Supporting our troops
I ran across this picture of a Toledo area band I saw a few times in the 60s. It was a classic at the time, even appeared in the Toledo Blade. A few years ago, grey and balding, The Mods reprised this photo as part of a reunion concert. Searching for that photo, I came across this news about Fred Jablonski, the “horizontal” drummer:
IMPORTANT NEWS! It has come to the attention of the remaining members of THE MODS, that our drummer and former band mate Fred Jablonski has cancer of the jaw and he is in dire need of an operation. Fred is a Vietnam Veteran and he has been trying to get the Veterans Administration to cover his operation but so far the VA is doing nothing to help Fred. While living in Sedona, Arizona Fred has been part of a popular rock group there called "GRATEFUL FRED". GRATEFUL FRED along with other musicians and friends of Fred Jablonski organized a benefit concert to help Fred and his wife Cindy with their mounting expenses.
Now the sermon – this guy is a Vietnam Vet, a man who put his life on the line for his country in an unpopular war. Is this the best that our country has to offer back – ridiculously high health insurance premiums and a fucking VA that has become a bureaucratic maze designed to frustrate anyone seeking the benefits they’ve earned? I won’t even get started on how health insurance costs have destroyed individualistic entrepreneurs in a country that officially says it encourages them. Well, maybe I will, but later…

In sleepy Sunday morning Perrysburg, residents still quietly appreciate the never-ending vigil of Commodore Perry, who has kept the town safe for angle parking since the dawn of the automobile age. The secret? Very wide streets.

This graven image of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry eternally defends the soul of Perrysburg from the evil ghosts of the imperial Royal Navy. Sometimes his marble lips appear to move and , when they do, they seem to say "We have met the enemy and they are ours; two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop," according to a local group of highly-qualified lip-readers.

The world’s best hamburgers are here, also in Findlay, OH. You will be shot down if you order incorrectly when there is a line, as there always has been at lunchtime. Don’t even mention toppings when they ask for your order, just hold up 1 finger for each hamburger you are ordering. If it’s more than 10, yell out the number. When you get to the head of the line, they’ll ask you what you want on them. Be sure to get the chili too. It is unique. A silky gravy, probably thickened with corn starch, and very meaty – made from the meat that didn’t make it as burgers the previous day. Buy a copy of The Courier (previously The Republican Courier) outside and sit at the counter overlooking the street. Munch slowly and thoughtfully, meditating on the day's events in Hancock County.

Morey’s Book Store, Findlay, OH. Inside are many ghosts of me, from ages 8 to 23, selecting materials to fill multiple bookshelves and an impressionable mind. It looks the same as it always did.

Echoes at Otsego Park on the scenic Maumee River
Day is dying in the west;
Heav’n is touching earth with rest;
Wait and worship while the night
Sets the evening lamps alight
Through all the sky.
Refrain
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts!
Heav’n and earth are full of Thee!
Heav’n and earth are praising Thee,
O Lord most high!
Lord of life, beneath the dome
Of the universe, Thy home,
Gather us who seek Thy face
To the fold of Thy embrace,
For Thou art nigh.
Refrain
While the deepening shadows fall,
Heart of love enfolding all,
Through the glory and the grace
Of the stars that veil Thy face,
Our hearts ascend.
Refrain
When forever from our sight
Pass the stars, the day, the night,
Lord of angels, on our eyes
Let eternal morning rise
And shadows end.
Refrain
Lyrics (verses 1 & 2):Mary Artemesia Lathbury (1841-1913)
