A Modest Proposal
For those of you who may have missed it, one reader added the following comment to my suggestion from a few days ago that our "fastest president" leg it out with Saddam to resolve our differences:
"An 800 meter dash through a minefield would solve a lot of problems."
Well, it might be worth a call to the Olympic Organizing Committee. I believe Dubya might consider it if he could be convinced that his buddies would get rich from it somehow.

Houellebecq Roundup
The Independent has a well-written profile in conjunction with the wrap-up of the testimony phase of the trial. And for those on the fence about whether Houellebecq is a misunderstood genius or self-promoting mountebank, it may help to know that he was recently the subject of a remarkably insight-free review from the National Review. I'm currently working my way through Houellebecq's essay on H.P. Lovecraft - an intriguing combination of author and subject if ever there was one. More to come once I figure out where I left my livre de poche.

Was it Something He Said?
Al Gore must have touched a serious nerve with his speech on Monday where he systematically dismantled the Administration's case for war with Iraq. While the official Bushies were icily dismissive, right-wing hatchet men and pundits have worked themselves into a rare lather of bile and vitriol - witness Andrew Sullivan in today's Salon and Michael Kelly in the Washington Post for starters. As my pal Guy remarked, too bad this guy didn't run for president in 2000.
