He Knew His Beer
Hard to believe that long-time Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau and President George W. Bush have much in common, but in fact the two were classmates at Yale back in the 60s. In a piece in today's Miami Herald, Trudeau reminisces about an occasion when the two served on a social committee together:
''George Bush showed great leadership qualities during those meetings,'' Trudeau said, his face deadpan. 'If we said, `Well, [we] think we should order X amount of beer,' and he said we should order Y amount of beer, we went with Y . . . He knew his beer.''

Still Waters Run Deep
Those of us with an eye on the Salon blog rankings page may have noticed the appearance of a new blog called "Ripple in Still Water," which consists of a blank template, a bunch of subcategories, and a pointer to Emphasis Added. No, it's not an insidious plot to build traffic - I wasn't clever enough to think of that. Without presuming to speak for the author, allow me to clarify that "Ripple" is the work (in progress) of a colleague of mine named Chris Blessington, whose enthusiasm for blogging is, regrettably, not matched by an abundance of free time. Knowing Chris, I am sure that he will have plenty to say once he starts rippling. So come on in, Chris, the water's fine!
