2002: Goodbye to All That
Here are a few things I’ll miss about 2002:
- My grandfather and grandmother, both of whom passed away this fall after remarkably long and accomplished lives
- My childhood home, sold last summer by my parents after 28 years
- A reliable income from my relationship with a senior executive at Compaq (now Hewlett-Packard), thrown into doubt now that he’s been pink-slipped
- My girlfriend’s condo, a nice place right down the street, sold (finally) in November
- A Democratic majority in the Senate, gone down in flames with Paul Wellstone’s plane
- A winning baseball team in Seattle – it looks like the M’s have a one-way ticket to the division cellar this year
- My old passport, expired early last year, filled with bureaucratic mementos of 10 years of international travel
- Eileen’s bar (formerly Ernie Steele’s), closed in 2001 but now replaced by a terrible upscale bistro as a final reminder of a bygone era
Here are a few things I’m looking forward to in 2003:
- Finding other work – kinda important.
- Getting this Iraq stuff resolved one way or the other – I’m sick of this issue being used as a political football
- Getting out of the country, if only for a few days. Didn’t manage it in 2002 (except for an overnight in Vancouver, BC, which doesn’t really count…)
- Doing a big redesign of Emphasis Added. Yes, it’s in the works.
- Comic-con International in San Diego, July 17-20: reliably the most fun week of the year.
- Pitchers and catchers report in February. Hey, hope springs eternal.
