Alberta Should Consider RFIDs for Cattle Tracking

Given the grief poor Alberta cattleman are going through with Mad Cow Disease, I thought I would re-post this article that David Fletcher from the State of Utah posted.

I think we should give serious consideration to this, to help ensure that Alberta Beef is some of the best and safest in the world!

Here's another BIG e-government project in the making.  Maybe we could also put RFIDs on people connected to onboard diagnostics and tracking systems so that you could know whenever anyone with an infectious disease is in your vicinity or approaching you and take evasive action.

Seriously, this national cattle tracking idea appears to be full speed ahead:

Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said yesterday the agency would speed up implementation of a national plan to track diseased livestock within 48 hours of an outbreak.

Veneman said. “I have asked USDA’s Chief Information Officer to expedite the development of the technology architecture to implement this system."

Computerworld points to four national cattle ID systems as models that may be ahead of the US:

Brazil will be moving to the use of RFIDs to track its cattle population (162 million head).

what 2004 will bring....

Following many other predictions for 2004, especially Jeffrey Nolan's I would like to express my thoughts as well:

RFID
The hype will continue, as well as the rather slow growth in real world applications, but it's a technology that will shape the world, it's unstoppable. We will see the stream of VC continue to flow.

Social Software
Is a clever idea, although it was there in 1999 already with Six Degrees it's now in the mind of users. Social Software providers will figure out several clever approaches to sell products and services through their networks. We'll see more start-ups with funding and some demises. I'm pretty sure the first German funding in this sector will come as well.

VoIP
VoIP will get big. Vonage will lead the pack, but user numbers will continue to rise as well as revenues. There are still many hurdles to take, but the time is about right.

Digital Content
Hardly noticed by the public this sector will flourish enormously. Music and movie downloads, dating and other sectors will see their revenues rise.

Weblogs
What should I say, it's a revolution :-)

Outsourcing/ BPO
More big outsourcing deals will be announced as well as several fundings, maybe we'll see a funding for a non-US based BPO company as well.

Nanotechnology
It's still more a buzzword than real available technology, 2004 will hardly bring a breakthrough.

Space Launch
The X-Prize will be taken in 2004

Wifi
Wifi with 802.11x is now in the minds of most consumers. The next generation of faster standards might make headlines.

Turn USB devices into networked devices. Keyspan is developing a USB-server, so that you can attach a USB device to a network and share it among Macs and PCs:
"Share a USB printer or scanner ..., turn a USB hard drive into a simple file server, make USB devices available via Wifi", etc. The router-sized server sports 4 12Mbps USB ports with full 500mA of power per, 10/100 RJ45 network port, and static, DHCP, and Rendezvous IP.
