An economic development agency of the Canadian
government is testing the LindowsOS operating system.

Lindows.com Inc. of San Diego touts its LindowsOS as a
low-cost alternative to Microsoft Windows. The
operating system is based on the Linux kernel.

For the past two weeks, four Nova Scotia Regional
Community Access Program centers has been running
LindowsOS on six computers the offer the public access
to the Internet the South West Shore Development
Authority.

"They are working beautifully," said Peter Dugas, the
program's chief technical officer.

Dugas also is director of international governmental
relations for Lindows.com. The company and the
regional economic development agency, which is based
in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, signed a partnership to
foster use of the LindowsOS by Canadian agencies.

Eventually, the team foresees the OS being used by
government agencies worldwide. In Canada, the team
expects up to 30,000 copies being deployed by the
government, Dugas said.

"We believe it will help the government cut costs," he
said.
