Oleg Dulin - Free Thoughts on FreeMind. Weblog: Oleg Dulin

I've been using FreeMind for over two weeks now and it has become the most indespensable tool in my arsenal.

My thoughts are not sufficiently organized to use a narrative tool. A mind mapping tool lets me see everything, all of my scattered thoughts, in one place and organize and refactor them as I see fit. This is perfect for taking notes because I can organize them in real-time.

The FreeMind file format is XML. That means there are unlimited possibilities for data manipulation and transformation. It also means you are not tied to FreeMind and can easily convert its files into other tools.
When you drop text onto a FreeMind node it automatically creates child nodes, one node per paragraph. When you drag text out of FreeMind and drop it into an application it will be inserted as a structured outline. And if the target applications supports RTF most of the formatting and colors are preserved as well.

I wish, however, it had more PIM features. For example, I would like to be able to assign alarms to nodes and get reminders. It would be cool to have an automatic feature to publish mindmap.I wish it could synch certain nodes marked as "TODO" with my Lotus Organizer todo list.

On a more advanced note, it would be nice to see support of spreadsheet like features by allowing JavaScript in nodes. Realtime collaboration could be facilitated by having a shared "MindMap server" that would allow for real-time editing of mind maps by multiple people. Support for RSS feeds as nodes in my mind map would be great too.

The only complaint I have is lack of support for delete key. Why in the name of heavens do I have to right-click and go through two levels of menus to delete a node ? For now, Ctrl-X works, but why isn't Delete key working ?

FreeMind and Personal Wiki

FreeMind effectively does what I wanted to implement in my personal wiki notepad application that I started a couple of months ago. Hence, I will focus on adding feature to FreeMind and contributing back rather than reinventing the wheel. [PubSub: RSS]

phpBB-php Bulletin Board

Got this from a link from Marc's Voice that pointed to SemText, so I tracked down the root technology, which is phpBB. The following blurb is from their website.

What is phpBB?

phpBB is a high powered, fully scalable, and highly customisable open-source bulletin board package. phpBB has a user-friendly interface, simple and straightforward administration panel, and helpful FAQ. Based on the powerful PHP server language and your choice of MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC database servers, phpBB is the ideal free community solution for all web sites.

Who are phpBB?

phpBB are a group of individuals based internationally who believe in opensource software. The project has been stable since its creation in June 2000 without changes in licencing, leadership or corporate associations. Our goals remain unchanged and clear, to continue developing and supporting a stable, free, opensource forum system.

SemText.

Anything Marc likes I check out, semantic hypertextAnything Danny Ayers likes - I check out.

So I just signed up for SemText.  Here we go - I wonder if it gets all hung up in Semantic kind of things - and misses teh 80'20 rule for portals, CMSs and end-user experience. If it can get the balance right - there's no limit how far it can go.

This is kind of what I was hoping Nova Spivack was doing and what Haystack was.  Well we'll see soon enough.
