Review of interpretation teaching and research in the British Isles: Appendices
D.Masters and J.Carter, April 1999
Bibliography of Interpretive Research 1994-1999
This bibliography has been prepared by David Masters and James Carter for Scottish
Natural Heritage (SNH) and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). It is
the outcome of a sub contract let with the University of Salford to undertake a
literature search of research in interpretation by UK authors. The search was
undertaken in early 1999
The literature search covers interpretation research published by UK authors in both
the UK and internationally since January 1994. It includes:
• Refereed academic journals
• Practitioners’ publications
• Text books
• Conference proceedings
Specific journals / periodicals reviewed included
• Journal of Sustainable Tourism
• Annals of Tourism Research
• Tourism Management
• Landscape Research
• Museum Journal
• International Journal of Heritage Studies
• Interpretation (the bulletin of CEI / SIBH)
• Tourism
• ECOS
‘Research’ was defined as any published material that either
• Uses original quantitative and / or qualitative data; or
• Uses any other results of empirical investigation; or
• Proposes new ideas or thinking about a subject.
References were located through a key word search of ‘interpretation’ using relevant
search engines, journal and library catalogues. This identified those publications
where heritage ‘interpretation’ is not mentioned in the title but is nevertheless a key
focus of the research.
The abstract for each reference was then accessed in order to determine whether (i)
the author/s are based in the UK, and (ii) whether the paper / publication qualifies as
research in heritage and environmental interpretation as defined above.
Summary
At least 253 pieces of interpretation ‘research’ have been published by UK-based
authors between January 1994 and March 1999. Of these, 86 are published in
refereed journals, primarily aimed at an academic audience; 124 are published in
practical journals and bulletins, primarily aimed at a practitioner audience; and 43 are
published in the form of text books and conference proceedings, potentially aimed at
both practitioners and academics.
Authors featured in the review are, as far as could be determined, UK based.
However, it was not always possible to identify the origin of the authors, so we do not
claim 100% accuracy in this regard. Similarly, it was not possible to access the
Review of interpretation teaching and research in the British Isles: Appendices
D.Masters and J.Carter, April 1999
abstract for every paper, book and conference report. It is therefore likely that a
small number of references are not specific to environmental and heritage
interpretation, but are related to ‘landscape interpretation’ or ‘art interpretation’ in the
sense that a landscape architect or art historian would understand these terms.
Access to Research Material
In terms of ease of access to research material, the inconsistent use of the term
‘interpretation’ will cause problems, as it has a quite different meaning to
environmental interpreters, landscape architects, historians, and art curators. We
had some difficulty choosing which material was relevant according to the titles of
some of the research. This could be of particular importance for journals and
publications that have a wide readership and accept material from a range of
professions, where some form of more commonly understood terminology would be
beneficial.
A significant volume of published research is not easily accessible to practitioners,
who have neither the time nor the inclination to study refereed papers for information
that might be of use in their work. There is, as ever, a need to bridge this gap more
effectively. Nevertheless, many of the relevant journals tend to take a more applied
perspective (e.g. Leisure Management, Museum Journal etc.), that may help to
reduce this academic-practitioner divide. It would be interesting to assess the
readership of such publications in this context, because although these journals
might pursue an editorial policy of carrying applied research, if their readership is
largely academic, then the gap will persist. The museums sector is again particularly
interesting in this respect, as many curators will regard their work as a mix of the
academic and practical.
Subject Area
In terms of the subject area of the research, museum studies dominates, reflecting
the size of this sector compared to site-based interpretation. However, our review
may be skewed by the inadvertent inclusion of research related to curatorial
interpretation of objects and collections, rather than interpretation for visitors. This
may reflect the philosophical differences between museum staff primarily concerned
with collections management and curation, and heritage interpreters primarily
concerned with telling stories about a place to visitors.
In general, most research examines interpretation as part of a more wide-ranging
study, and there is relatively little work on interpretation as a practice in its own right.
Of the research specific to interpretation, most is evaluative or is seeking to appraise
the merits and drawbacks of different media. Very little research has taken place on
the impacts of interpretation in terms of economic activity or visitor attitudes and
behaviour. We regard this as a major weakness in the existing body of research.
