Content Plus Transaction Based Digital Content Model-Digital Content for Fee, Server for Free:

This would be what I would term as an open source content server model for the 21st Century, where you store the proprietary content on a open source server, and charge a transaction based approach for content. To me this is good for both producer and consumer, in that:

  • there is less of a middle man and middle man fees
  • server based software developers make money based on a percentage of the take riding on their open source server software, rather than selling the server software to the content producers
  • content producers have less money going towards infrastructure, and with this model, because everything is based on a percentage of purchased digital products, everyone gains, and the only losers are the companies that are based on the old way of doing things

Basic Model:

  • Transaction based model that pays for content and technology, simliar to Apple's iTunes, only server software is open source. Model is content plus transaction fee for content and distribution partners
  • Digital Rights Management Software developed for open source database products that are XML compatible, for example mySQL
  • Content served from open source server, but consumers via Windows clients
  • Identity and Micropayments through banking institutions faciliated by USB Smartcard that is compatible with Interac systems, security maintained via SSL
  • Make compatible with Google API, you can't be bought if you can't be found
  • Make compatible with Amazon and eBay APIs, build on what works rights now

Basic Technology Suppliers:

  • Rightsmarket for digital rights management software
  • Rainbow for USB Smartcard that serves as NetInterac card
  • Peppercoin-possibly a micropayment approach like Ron Rivest developed after he got out of the security software business

Based on an article in TJ's Weblog, I would add First Gate as an alternative to Peppercoin. Another vendor to consider is BitPass.
