Exposed!

Since Kat Donohue provided the universe with a succinct summary of my CV -- http://blogs.salon.com/0001068/2002/09/08.html -- I hope all of you who grace my blog with your presence will understand my somewhat automatic reaction against many things both Communist and Soviet.  What began to puzzle me lately was the fact that I found many Communists among both American and European intellectuals who also happened to be very decent human beings.  You have to understand that in the former Soviet Union, a believing Communist and a decent human being were contradictions in terms, belonging to two completely non-intersecting sets (certainly after '68 if not before).  Having struggled with the difference I reached a fairly simple conclusion.  The decent (or half decent human beings, a la the hero of Koestler's "Darkness at Noon") in the USSR were systematically exterminated by comrade Stalin.  Those who managed to survive in positions of power and influence had to be decent imitators of Stalin ruthlessness with uncanny survival capabilities.  Over the next several days I'll post entries about several of the European Communists, so I don't want to give anyone wrong impressions about myself ;-)
