Columbus Day, and my contribution for the greater good of humanity
I was very surprised to see as much blog activity as I did yesterday. You see, it was Columbus Day on Monday, and businesses were closed in New England. My patient wife explained to me that Columbus Day is a pretty much local New England holiday, ignored by the rest of these United States (not to speak of the world).
Well, as for me, I am grateful for Mr. Columbus for his persistence. Without him and his discovery of the American Continent, I may have ended up an ex Soviet businessman with bad teeth and no scruples. Instead, I am a proud recipient of American dentistry and morality. As such, I was somewhat disturbed by a blog entry I spotted the other day, were it was implied that self absorbed people who deem themselves smart are annoying and have little urge to be useful for society at large. A horrible thought crossed my mind – maybe potential employers are seeing through my guise! Maybe they see a self-absorbed dilettante who is no good for his fellow men. Worse yet, the selfsame potential employers maybe reading this blog, trying to find in it a modicum of contribution or the greater good of society and finding none. For that purpose, I shall selflessly offer an idea to be picked up by whomever so wishes and so desires, which I hope will bring them great riches and generally benefit the technical community.
By word of adumbration, let me state that both my wife and I are in the technical field. This, as you can imagine, makes for fascinating pillow talk. It also makes for rather funny exchanges. For instance, one day I was reorganizing something in the bathroom and dropped it. My wife asked whether I dropped something and if I was okay. I thought she asked whether I dropped a packed. My first thought was that we had no Internet connection in the bathroom. Scary but true. People who deal with technology get attached to it secondary manifestations. I am an inveterate cell phone user. I keep my ringer on vibrate, which I find to be the least disturbing to the population at large (you see, I do have some regard to people other than myself). As I wear my cell phone on a belt clip, I often get false alarms, thinking the phone is ringing when it is not. A slight stomach rumble, or an itch sounds and feels completely like my cell phone vibrating at my hip. I don’t find that phenomenon disturbing, but rather comforting. Here is my point: someone should come up with a series of calming and soothing products for the use of technologists. For instance, I have an alarm clock that makes rain, wind and jungle sounds to help me fall asleep. When the alarm clock goes off, rather than buzzing annoyingly, it makes the sound of bells. Very pleasant. Well, I think that an IT alarm clock with IT soothing sounds should be produced. Wake up to the tune of a modem connecting. Give me some soothing white noise sounding like a computer booting up. Make the snooze sound like a hard drive spinning out of control or a pager going off. You too can help the cause – any more ideas?
