Blast from the British past

A random discussion with a new British friend brought up some really cool Nostalgia. It was Thanksgiving dinner and somehow we got on to the topic of zany British TV shows. Then, very quickly we discovered that both of us were rabid fans of a show that ran from ’79 through ’82, and was called “Not the 9 O’clock News” (for the Isarelis that read this blog, I am referring to “Mabat Hafukh” as it was known in the holy land).

Having just listened to an audio recording of a compilation of their sketches, I am on a quest to find the thing on DVD or at least VHS. The format was that of a newscast with a great deal of short sketches. And you know what, even today, over 20 years later, a great deal of that stuff may not be shown on TV in the States – it would be deemed too offensive and explicit. SNL is the 700 Club by comparison.

So, out of curiosity, has the show ever been broadcast in some way or fashion in the States? By the way, this was the start of Rowan Atkinson’s career, as well as much of the creative team that brought us “The Black Adder” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”
