The Two Towers Kissing Jessica Stein

The relatively high intensity of my current job training (well, it’s high in and of itself, but particularly high relatively to more months of unemployment than I care to mention) makes my weekly bloging fairly insipid. I feel an urgent need to fill up on experiences over the weekend to last me through the week. This may or may not work, but at least it’s worth a shot.

This particular weekend was dedicated (to a degree) to movie watching. Being hooked on patters I was curious whether the movies I ended up watching had some connection. You be the judge – the two were “The Two Towers,” the latest installment of “The Lord of the Rings” and “Kissing Jessica Stein.”

Staying true to my quest of squeezing as much blogage from the weekend, I shall review “The Two Towers” over the next several days. Now I would like to address the question as to what the two movies have in common. It took me a bit, but I found it – both have a high degree of fairly improbably fantasy. I think everyone knows what “The Two Towers” is all about. “Kissing Jessica Stein” is about a typically neurotic Jewish single gal of 28 working as a reporter in NYC trying to find the right guy. Our lass is very picky until she finds the perfect mate, who happens to be another lass. So, what do the two movies have in common you might ask, where is the fantasy element in the New York gender bender flick? I’ll tell you.

Actually, Let’s see if you can guess what it is. Because, you see, it’s a fantasy element, which to my knowledge is common virtually to every movie, TV show and sitcom about the Big Apple. Got it, got it? It’s the size of the apartments!!! I mean, GOOD LORD!!! We are talking about gallery assistant managers and copyright editors living in multiplexes. Anyone who rents in NYC and makes under 100K net (i.e., around 200K gross) lives in a box. But you just look at any show – “Friends,” “Mad about you,” “Sienfeld,” or any Woody Allen movie, and it looks like all those people discovered the fourth dimension or some such thing. Naturally, it’s all a big Communist conspiracy (we all know that the movie and TV industry is replete with Communist sleepers), for it all boils down to the exemplification of the odious principles of Social Realism that crippled Russian letters for two generations, the concept of art depicting things not as they are but as they should be and will be in the bright future offered through scientific Communism.

Lodgers of the world, unite!
