The Lord of the Flies
Okay, so not everyone is supposed to be intrepid. As we all learned from “1984,” everyone has a fear of something, no exceptions. Fine, I can deal with that. What I sometimes fail to understand is why some people can overcome their fear through subjecting others to what they are afraid of.
It’s late, I just wasted too many hours on a thoroughly unnecessary task so I am a bit hostile (which accounts for the somewhat hostile tone of this blog, and the fact that it is not about a non Lee Strasburg play I saw the other day, but hey…). All of a sudden I hear someone scream in an adjacent office. I look through the glass wall and my coworker is standing there with her hands on her mouth. “Is she hurt? Did she walk into the window or the door by mistake?” I think to myself. I leap across the hall and burst into her office. My coworker is standing there pointing at a medium size fly that is resting on the door of her office (on the inside). I know that people are afraid of snakes, mice and other rodents, but I never heard of fly phobia. Like I said, to each his own. But for some reason, now that I gallantly burst to her rescue, my coworker discovers some inner resources that allow her to (gingerly) attack the fly with an interoffice memorandum and swipe it unto my trousers. Go figure.
