Another Creative Loafing paper, the Weekly Planet.
Last week they ran some interesting stories about Florida's Prepaid College Program and Republican hack Katherine Harris.
As it turns out this Prepaid College Program Florida has running sounds like a good idea. The problem is in the details. There is a use-it-or-lose clause with a finite time frame. Right now there 800 million dollars of unclaimed assets. Florida had chosen not to try and notify beneficiaries of those prepaid plans using social security numbers and tax records kept by the IRS to notify these people. Jeb Bush and the board of this program have declined to use procedures similar to other states with unclaimed funds. Miami accountant Charles Gomes has struck out on his own to notify these people. A great article about government greed, and how some people try to do the right thing.
The Katherine Harris story is real funny. She says that Florida election system is one of the best in the nation. She also says she is involved in debates and forums with opponent in the upcoming election. Not only is she a Republican hack, but also an outright liar.
Florida's Katherine Harris. See, Kmart does have good cosmetics!
While the steak did occur it turns out that the photo was 'altered." And not in a good way. The metal support for the glass did not cover the gentleman's family jewels. Turns out the photographer 'Photoshopped' a certain appendage, making it not clearly visible.
Probably not the first time the gentleman has heard "Where is it?"
The blog Paris scooped me on that Photoshop report.
Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta has been released.
They cover it all. Do you need to know the best places to eat? What Atlantan's feel Sherman should come back and burn? Or how about the Best Reason to Choose Burial Over Cremation?
I was pleased to see Cynthia Tucker get the Best Columnist nod. Boortz getting the Best Local Celebrity We Love to Hate award was nice also.
A little deeper in Creative Loafing one finds a column with a few more "Best Of's." Do you need to know the Best Gathering of Women in Fake Beards? Or the Best Place to Drink Whiskey and Yell Obscenities? This column is for you.
One of my favorite weekly columns.
