Evander : Just say no to drugs!
However adultery is okay by him!
Couldn't resist. See ya!
Another Creative Loafing paper, the Weekly Planet.
Last week they ran some interesting stories about Florida's Prepaid College Program and Republican hack Katherine Harris.
As it turns out this Prepaid College Program Florida has running sounds like a good idea. The problem is in the details. There is a use-it-or-lose clause with a finite time frame. Right now there 800 million dollars of unclaimed assets. Florida had chosen not to try and notify beneficiaries of those prepaid plans using social security numbers and tax records kept by the IRS to notify these people. Jeb Bush and the board of this program have declined to use procedures similar to other states with unclaimed funds. Miami accountant Charles Gomes has struck out on his own to notify these people. A great article about government greed, and how some people try to do the right thing.
The Katherine Harris story is real funny. She says that Florida election system is one of the best in the nation. She also says she is involved in debates and forums with opponent in the upcoming election. Not only is she a Republican hack, but also an outright liar.
Florida's Katherine Harris. See, Kmart does have good cosmetics!
While the steak did occur it turns out that the photo was 'altered." And not in a good way. The metal support for the glass did not cover the gentleman's family jewels. Turns out the photographer 'Photoshopped' a certain appendage, making it not clearly visible.
Probably not the first time the gentleman has heard "Where is it?"
The blog Paris scooped me on that Photoshop report.
Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta has been released.
They cover it all. Do you need to know the best places to eat? What Atlantan's feel Sherman should come back and burn? Or how about the Best Reason to Choose Burial Over Cremation?
I was pleased to see Cynthia Tucker get the Best Columnist nod. Boortz getting the Best Local Celebrity We Love to Hate award was nice also.
A little deeper in Creative Loafing one finds a column with a few more "Best Of's." Do you need to know the Best Gathering of Women in Fake Beards? Or the Best Place to Drink Whiskey and Yell Obscenities? This column is for you.
One of my favorite weekly columns.
The Rittenhouse Review talks about the party of fiscal responsibility
Actually he writes about Republican deficits and Republican lies. Very important reading!
It amazes me that the Republicans have taken single issue groups, such as anti-abortion and the NRA, and has gotten them to vote for and support the Republican party no matter what they do, if they only keep supporting their single issues. When I look at most of the NRA members and anti-abortionists, I see people who are being hurt by the Republican policies, but they are blind to it. They are so focused on their single issues, they are ignoring to the big picture. But they don't care as long as their single issues are protected.
These single issue groups need to really look at what the Republican party is doing. How their fiscal policies will sell out the middle class, upper and lower, to benefit big business and the most wealthy Americans. Is the thought of having no regulations on the sale of assault rifles, or having no ballistic fingerprint registration, worth destroying the country for you kids? The NRA may or may not get their unneeded protection, but you can bet your ass that the Republican's will get their tax cuts for business and the most wealthy. The middle class will get no cuts. Take a look at the numbers.
I wish the Democrats had the balls to stand up and confront the single issue groups on this. They need to ask if this is the best way to go. What good is getting rid of abortions if nobody can afford to feed their children? What good is owning a bunch of nice guns of you can't afford your house payment?
I wish the country was such a good place where no women felt the need to get an abortion. I wish that people were confident enough in their country that they did not feel such an overwhelming need to stockpile guns. That they knew their right to own hunting and personal protection guns was secure. None of this will happen under the Republicans, however. As the economic gulf increases, all Americans will feel less secure and safe.
Cynthia Tucker's column on ballistic finger printing brought in a lot of letters to the AJC.
Most of these NRA hacks, who probably used their crayons to write their letters, kept harping on one thing: the ballistic fingerprint of a gun can be easily changed. They kept repeating that any criminal that wasn't an idiot could easily alter the barrel of the gun so that the fingerprint was different and thus avoid detection. Well guess what? If these intelligent criminals would wear gloves, they would not be caught by regular fingerprints methods. This is a simple and obvious solution to a well-known criminal investigative technique. Yet every year, in every state, countless criminals are put away due to their normal fingerprints. Criminals are not smart.
Now if Chartlon Heston were going to rob a bank, if he could remember where one was, he may know, to run a file through the barrel. He might also know to alter the mechanisms that leave marks on the casings. I don't think most criminals would, or would not take the time to mess with it. All most criminals know about guns are point and shoot.
All these gunslingers who wrote and called Cynthia Tucker an idiot should probably go research a little bit. They might then become aware of all the stupid things criminals do, and how they get caught by basic police procedure. It might be time better sent than by sitting around stroking their barrel.
Again, any tool to catch criminals is a good one. Any new one would merely be added to the pile of investigative techniques now being used. You would still have the right to own guns, but they would just have to be test fired at the factory and the results entered into a database. Nobody would ever look at the data unless it was drawn as a match. If you are not illegally shooting anyone or anything, or selling the gun up the iron pipeline to the northern states, what is the problem?
I liked Cynthia's column and would easily support political candidates who had the balls to make similar stands.
