Happy 100th birthday to George Orwell
Today is British author George Orwell's 100th birthday (thank you, Jan of Secular Blasphemy, for the reminder). Orwell wrote two of my favorite books, 1984 and Animal Farm, which are about fascist oppression.
Now that Oprah has revived her book club with an oldie but goodie (John Steinbeck's East of Eden), maybe she'll consider 1984. (Because of Oprah's influence, at this writing East of Eden sits at No. 3 on amazon.com.)
I mean, could 1984 be more timely?
Big Brother's slogans sound like slogans for George W. Bush's "re"-election campaign:
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
I dropped Oprah's people a line and recommended that Oprah consider 1984 as a future book club selection. If you also would like to see her pick 1984, you can e-mail Oprah's people by clicking here.
