One of the two men pictured on the left and in the center is president wannabe Sen. Joseph Lieberman. The other is Sen. Palpatine, the traitorous "Star Wars" character who eventually becomes the evil Emperor Palpatine (right). Can you tell which is which?

Lieberman's conversion to the Dark Side is now complete

Presidential aspirant Sen. Joseph Lieberman called the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq "just" several times today:

(1) "By their words, some in my party are sending out a message that they don't know a just war when they see it," Lieberman said of his Democratic presidential rivals.

(2) "There's a danger that in expressing the justified questions about the 16 words in the State of the Union, about the stunning lack of preparedness of the Bush administration for post-Saddam Iraq, that we obscure the fact that this was a just war," he said.

(3) Reports the Associated Press: "Lieberman also complained that the administration, which has mishandled the intelligence flap, 'threatens to give a bad name to a just war.'"

Lieberman either really thinks that the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq -- which the United Nations and world opinion opposed and in which thousands of people have died -- is "just," or he is saying what he thinks he needs to say in order to become the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate.

In either case, it's safe to say that his conversion to the Dark Side is now complete.

Lieberman also said that he supports the assassination of members of Saddam Hussein's regime, which by U.S. law is illegal. He said of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq: "The end was just [that's No. 4] and the means were fitting to the task, as was the killing of Saddam Hussein's two sons and the encouraging search going on now in Iraq for Saddam Hussein himself."

Nevermind that the invasion and occupation of Iraq -- which did absolutely nothing to the United States to warrant an invasion and occupation -- are costing American taxpayers billions of dollars when the United States has a projected record-smashing $455 billion federal deficit for this year. And nevermind the thousands of civilians who have been killed and the U.S. troops who are being picked off each day in what is starting to look like another Vietnam.

Because this is "a just war."

Yeah, that's what I had figured.
